United Way of Southwest Michigan’s Signature Volunteer Event, Rake a Difference, Launches Senior & Volunteer Sign-Ups
United Way of Southwest Michigan is gearing up for its annual Rake a Difference event, set to take place on Thursday, November 14, 2024, across Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties. The organization is calling on volunteers to step forward and help make a difference in the lives of local seniors by assisting with yard work and leaf raking.
Rake a Difference is an important community event where volunteers come together to support seniors who may struggle to maintain their yards. The initiative not only helps keep neighborhoods clean and safe but also fosters connections between volunteers and the seniors they assist.
“We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who make Rake a Difference possible each year,” said Debbie Ramirez, Director of Volunteer Engagement at United Way of Southwest Michigan. “This event has a significant impact on the lives of seniors in our community, and we’re excited to see even more people join us this year. Volunteering for Rake a Difference is a rewarding experience that brings our community closer together. It’s so much fun!”
Volunteer sign-ups are now open. United Way of Southwest Michigan welcomes individuals, families, employee teams, and groups to participate. No prior experience is needed, and all necessary supplies—including rakes, gloves, and leaf bags—will be provided. Volunteers can register online at uwsm.org/rake-a-difference.
In addition to seeking volunteers, United Way is also encouraging seniors in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties to sign up for assistance. Seniors or their loved ones can simply call 269-932-3554 during regular business hours to request help with yard work. Due to high demand, seniors are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible, and some seniors may be placed on a waiting list.
In 2023, the largest group of volunteers ever stepped up to help area seniors, with 1,333 people participating across the three county area to help 345 seniors. Most of those volunteers and seniors were in Berrien County, but the need in Cass and Van Buren counties are just as great. Ramirez is especially calling on volunteers willing to help in those two counties.
Online registration deadline for volunteers firmly closes Friday, October 18, with registration for seniors by phone closing September 30th.
